My new Oakley Sunglasses.

Monday, 19 October 2009
For those of you that have followed my past expeditions will know that I don't use my GPS for navigation . . . For two reasons, firstly, I believe that if you rely on a GPS for navigation and it fails, what do you do then? And secondly, I can't see the GPS screen anyway because of my bloody bad eyesight!
I've tried before to get prescription lens put into my wrap-around Oakley Sunglasses, but no optometrist would touch them. But it's got to a point that I can't even see my maps now, unless I hold them 2 metres away!
So it's got to the time that I've had to do something about it. It's funny how things happen. With flying my helicopter, I've become friends with another helicopter flyer, Michael, who just happens to be an optometrist at the Q Superstore here on the Gold Coast.
After mentioning my dilemma to him, he said that he should be able to do something for me. I said to him that they had to be the Oakley Sunglasses as they wrap-around perfectly. He reckoned he wouldn't have a problem getting them made.
With that I was into his shop for my eyes to be tested for my new Oakley Sunglasses. The test didn't take long and Michael said he would send the glasses away to be fitted with my prescription.
Well it took about a month and four different lens manufacturers before he found one that would even attempt the 'operation'. They don't like trying to fit lens in glasses with so much wrap-round.
When the day my sunglasses arrived, I was in Michael's store five minutes after his phone call! So armed with a map and my GPS, I put on my new sunglasses and with amazement I could SEE the screen on the GPS, let alone the small writing on the map!
This now meant I could see where I'm paddling to! People with good eyesight might not understand, but I was the happiest man in the world . . . well almost.
This then brought on another dilemma. My last pair of sunglasses was attached to my PFD by the bullet camera being permanently attached to the glasses.
With this pair I wanted them still on my head when I took off my PFD, so I had to come up with a solution . . . Look forward to the next update!
