Outback Ultralight Oven 8”

Saturday, 24 October 2009
Over the years paddling with other like minded people, you get to see some great ideas and gear that others have come up with.
For me, I look at these ideas and gear to see weather they would be suited for prolong periods in the sea kayaking world, with most being more suited to the weekend and sort paddling trips than long expeditions.
But every now and then someone comes up with a winner! On my recent Hinchinbrook trip, 'Rainbow Girl' (Karen) pulled out a winner with the Outback Ultralight Oven. (I've got a feeling she's trying to beat me for the title of 'Gear Freak', but I won't let that happen).
About half way through the trip, one afternoon Rainbow Girl presented us with garlic pizza bread before then offering slices of freshly cooked pizza! I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!
After savouring every last mouthful, I said to her that she HAD to show me how she made them! That was when I got my first look at the Outback Ultralight Oven. To cut a long story short, when I returned home I was straight onto the computer to hunt one down.
Well it wasn't long before one arrived in my hot little hands! Backpacker's Pantry make two models, the first being the Outback Oven-10" (30cm), with the second being the one more suited for my requirements, the Outback Ultralight Oven-8" (20cm), because I didn't want it to take any more bloody space than needed!
As the Outback Ultralight Oven-8" doesn't come with pan or pot, I went looking for something that would suit the criteria for cooking pizza's and a beautiful loaf of bread.
I came up with a 20cm round non-stick cake tray. This would be perfect as once the pizza is cooked, the ring of the cake tray comes off with the pizza or loaf of bread for it to be displayed in all its glory! I then proceeded to drill a series of holes around the ring to not only help with the cooking, but also to make it lighter, every little bit helps!
The Outback Ultralight Oven-8" also comes with a thermometer which needs a lid on top of the cake tray to sit on. To get around this, and also to help with the cooking process, I brought a 9" round fry pan splatter guard and then proceeded to cut the handle off. This then sits perfectly on top of the cake tray with the thermometer on top of that.
After 15 minutes cooking on my Jetboil, the end result is a pizza to die for!
