With only 4 months until I head off on my next expedition, I'm now into my second week of daily training on my mountain bike.
I found that the best training for me is to ride my bike in the middle of the day. It puts me in the hottest part of the day, 30°C, but this helps to condition my body for kayaking in a very hot environment. This builds up my cardio fitness for the long hours of paddling ahead of me. At the moment I've started out biking about 250km per week, but this will build up to about 400km per week very soon.
As for the paddling part of my training, I've found that after paddling for many years the body builds up muscle memory, so full on daily training won't kick until about 4 or 5 weeks before I head off.
Another trick that works well for me is to only paddle about 30-40km per day in the first week of any expedition, and then hitting the 70-80km mark once the body's tuned in for the grind.
So if you've got nothing to do with your day and want to get some fitness in on your bike, drop me an email and come riding!
PS: For the rest of you, I'm not going to tell you where I ride, just in case you were wanting to run me down!
